The Power of Music
it's happened to all of us..even though we may not have known it at the time, a song somewhere, somehow imprints itself in your psyche, and it is forever after connected with specific events from your past. I have many of these, mostly happy memories, but this one was bittersweet. It is such an incredibly beautiful song, and I love it still, but the memory will always haunt me.
On the floating, shapeless oceans I did all my best to smile til your singing eyes and fingers drew me loving into your eyes.
And you sang "Sail to me, sail to me; Let me enfold you."
Here I am, here I am waiting to hold you. Did I dream you dreamed about me? Were you here when I was full sail?
Now my foolish boat is leaning, broken love lost on your rocks. For you sang, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow." Oh my heart, oh my heart shies from the sorrow. I'm as puzzled as a newborn child. I'm as riddled as the tide. Should I stand amid the breakers? Or shall I lie with death my bride?
Hear me sing: "Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you." "Here I am. Here I am, waiting to hold you."

Absolutely brilliant footage of around the Bay Area. Especially love how he has captured the clouds as they boil and roll across the coastal hills...

Honor your Child's Truths
"Your children and not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell
in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your
dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you."
- excerpt from Kahlil Gibran's book, the Prophet

Press on Control
Article in the San Jose Contemporary Art Examiner
by Erica Goss
Control
opened August 6 at SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco. Curated
by Karen Gutfreund and juried by the Guerrilla Girls West, Control
features the work of seventy-nine artists: ninety-two pieces in all.
The opening was a success, as visitors to the gallery viewed works that
ranged from Monica Rickler Marks' mixed media assemblage "Control VS.
Letting Go," which "explores the struggle between attempting to control
every detail in life," to Ruth Waters' "Home, $weet Home," a sculpture
created in the shape of a tiny house, depicting that "home is the most
dangerous place for women."
In the curator's notes, Karen
Gutfreund writes, "What does one control? How have political, social or
economic controls shaped one's life and the lives of others? In what
ways does the media and popular culture dictate and control?" The
introduction by the Guerrilla Girls West, who juried the show, asks,
"Is 'control' a euphemism for the role of women?"
Each artist
responded to the prompt, "control," in her own personal, provocative
and individual way. Many of the works are painfully honest, taking on
issues of gender, war, politics, domestic and sexual abuse. The show
is required viewing for anyone who wants a strong, unflinching look at
the world through the eyes of women visual artists.
The South
Bay's Cristina Velazquez ("La Mujer Tiene que Ser Curander/Woman Must
Be a Healer,") Lucy Liew ("The Core,") and Trina Merry ("Imperial
Wartime Jellyfish") are represented in the show. To learn more about
Cristina Velazquez, read my article Cristina Velazquez: transforming
life into art.
Control runs from August 6-29 at the SOMArts Main Gallery, 934 Brannan Street, San Francisco, CA.

new painting blog
I invite you to come visit my new blog which features some of my new small scale paintings. The bite-sized paintings featured there combine my fascination with the juxtaposition of shapes... namely of a circle in a square, my love of visual texture, and all things sushi. Currently working my way through various types of Maki, my goal is to offer postings of fresh new paintings each week!
Contact me if you would be interested in cross-posting blog links. :)

What each must seek in his life never was on land or sea. It is something out of his own unique potentiality for experience, something that never has been and never could have been experienced by anyone else.
